The International Society of Trace Elements in the Environment (ISTEE) is a global scientific organization dedicated to understanding the presence, behavior, and impact of trace elements and heavy metals in the environment. It brings together scientists, researchers, policymakers, industry professionals, and other stakeholders who work on environmental quality, pollution, and remediation.

ISTEE promotes the exchange of knowledge and research on how trace elements move through ecosystems—across soil, water, air, plants, animals, and humans—and how these processes affect environmental and public health. The society is committed to supporting scientific progress through conferences, symposia, publications, and educational outreach. It actively fosters training opportunities, diversity in science, and the participation of early-career researchers and scientists from developing countries.

A cornerstone of ISTEE’s activities is its biennial international conference, which serves as a major forum for sharing the latest scientific advances in trace element and heavy metal research. This conference focuses neither on a specific metal nor a specific environmental medium, but instead aims to provide a unique multidisciplinary platform for discussion and presentation of state-of-the-art research to a broad international scientific community. It provides an opportunity to stay on top of the latest developments in tools, approaches and methods to identify, assess and manage metals in various areas of application, including industry, environmental management, societal needs and policy.
